Summer sketching is right around the corner — let’s get ready.

If you’ve been curious about urban sketching but aren’t sure how to begin, this workshop offers a friendly, low‑pressure introduction. Think of it as tending the garden before everything blooms: a few simple warm‑ups now will make your sketching season flourish.

Together, we’ll break down how to approach a scene, what visual cues to look for, and how to compose a sketch that fits on your page. You’ll leave with practical tools, creative inspiration, and the confidence to capture the world around you.

Supply list:

  • Sketchbook
  • Your favorite pen
  • 1 soft lead pencil 4B or higher
  • Watercolor set
  • 1 waterbrush and/or 1 watercolor paintbrush, size 10 or larger
  • Water and a water container

Bio

Jane started sketching on location in 2009 when she joined the fledgling Urban Sketchers Seattle group at a sketch outing in Volunteer Park. Since then, she has been sketching nonstop and volunteering as an admin with Urban Sketchers in Seattle and internationally. She served seven years on the staff of the quarterly newsletter, Drawing Attention. The practice of sketching on location for over 15 years has given her the confidence to pull out her sketchbook and start sketching just about anywhere. “Travel sketching is the best! It’s not only inspiring, memorable, and endlessly entertaining; it also provides the best souvenirs!”
