Workshops

Spontaneous Summer Workshop I

Meet just outside the entrance to PCC.

One of the things I love about drawing people is the energy and vitality people add to a space. In this workshop, we will start by exploring different ways to depict people individually, then watch and draw as people gather in groups – twosomes, threesomes, queues, and crowds. Then we’ll put people in their place by drawing the scene around them.

Learning goals:

After taking this workshop, you will be able to:

● Paint figures using simple brush strokes.

● Focus on basic form to make impressions of people.

● Place people in context with believable proportions with believable perspective.

● Use values to distinguish people from context.

● Blend shapes to create groups, then add distinctions as desired.

The outcome will be greater confidence and inclination to include people in urban sketches. Students will learn to use different approaches in different sketching situations.

Supply list:

  • Sketchbook
  • Your favorite pen
  • 1 soft lead pencil 4B or higher
  • Watercolor set
  • 1 waterbrush and/or 1 watercolor paintbrush, size 10 or larger
  • Water and water container
  • Paper towels for dabbing brushes
  • Optional: chair or stool

Bio

Jane started sketching on location in 2009 when she joined the fledgling Urban Sketchers Seattle group at a sketch outing in Volunteer Park. Since then, she has been sketching non-stop and volunteering with Urban Sketchers in Seattle and internationally. She served seven years on the staff of the quarterly newsletter, Drawing Attention. The practice of sketching on location for over 15 years has given her the confidence to pull out her sketchbook and start sketching just about anywhere. “Travel sketching is the best! It’s not only inspiring, memorable, and endlessly entertaining; it also provides the best souvenirs!”

Spontaneous Summer Workshop II

Saturday, August 17
12:30 -3:30
Meet at the Ballard Bell Tower  (see photo below)
on the intersection of 22nd Ave NW and Ballard Avenue

Are you a new urban sketcher? Curious about how it all works? It can seem daunting to begin when you are faced with a blank page. There is so much before us; how can we put it down on paper? "I only have so much time". What is interesting about this scene? What do I focus on? How do I make it all fit? These questions and so many more can hover around your psyche like gossiping biddies, even for seasoned sketchers.

In this class, we’ll learn some easy steps to get started. We’ll learn how to simplify the scene, find a focal point, use measures to make it all fit, add a few people, and put it all together in a step-by-step process.

Supplies:

·       Sketchbook of your choice.

·        Light color watercolor pencil. Example: Caran D’Arche – sky blue or light ultramarine. Pink or light green will also work. We will use these to set up a sketch on paper. After  drawing with ink the color will wash away.

·        Your favorite pen, ,fineliner, or pencil to make simple black and white drawings.

·        Watercolor set/water/paper towels for blotting, etc.

·        Optional: chair or stool

·        Hat for sunshade
