Simply put, I love sketching. I’ve worked with various materials—oil paint, watercolor, handmade paper, to name a few—but I was always a bit frustrated by not having enough time to finish major projects. Nearly twenty years ago, my son gave me a small sketchbook with the most scrumptious handmade Italian paper. When I had the unexpected opportunity to visit China in 2007, I took the sketchbook with me; it became my favorite souvenir. The sketches instantly bring me back to some wonderful memories.
What I love about urban sketching is that it gets me out into the world. I can create art anywhere I am—no need for a studio or expensive materials. Practicing sketching on location for over 16 years has given me the confidence to pull out my sketchbook and start sketching just about anywhere. And travel sketching is the best. It’s not only inspiring, memorable, and endlessly entertaining, but also makes the best souvenirs!
Frederick Franck, author of “The Zen of Seeing” and several other books, said, “To me then, drawing is a way of living, a way towards life’s fullness. It is not just a technique and certainly not a mere skill. It is a total response.”
It’s also really fun!
I really enjoy your work & follow you on Instagram since I started posting to IG Dec 1 last year. In fact, you were one of the very first people to like my sketch. Thanks for sharing your passion with me & the rest of the world. - Don (@dondet44)
